This study sought to understand why nurses who were working in elective surgical care units in public hospitals may not have been fully represented in their units. In all, 40 elective surgical care units in public hospitals were selected in a stratified, cross-sectional design. A self-administered, quantitative survey was distributed to nurses working on elective surgical care units. Nurses working on elective surgical care units had their knowledge of elective surgical care and nursing practice, and their perceived support of nurses' work in elective surgical care evaluated. The survey was returned from nurses working on 24 units. A total of 45 per cent of surveyed nurses were from the internal medicine specialty, and 90 per cent were registered nurses. Seventy-five per cent of the surveyed nurses worked in one of two settings: a day surgery unit and an intensive care unit.
